The place demonstrates a significant role in the development of Corrigin, and as a benefit to the entire community. The extensive structure is an integral element in the streetscape and townscape of Corrigin. The place represents a significant community achievement expressed in a fine example of architecture.
When the building was completed in 1927, it extended 165 feet along Campbell Street. Further additions have extended that length, in the same manner as the existing building. The parapet frontage steps up to the truncated corner where a pediment is included in the design. The original verandahs with timber columns at the roads edge have been removed and replaced with a suspended cantilever canopy. The original entry across the truncated corner is blocked. Some alterations both inside and outside accommodated the expansion.
In 1917, Hari7 Gayfer played a leading role in the establishment of the Corrigin and Districts Farmers Co-operative Company Ltd. The shareholders were members of the community and with a good manager in place, the entire community benefits by bulk purchases and a comprehensive range of goods available. The Co-op has been an important employer in the district. Some other businesses which have been accommodated in the shops along Campbell St, including; Atkinson's butcher shop, Lindsay's Tearooms, Kirkwood Bros Fountain and Tearooms (and cool-drink factory), a hairdresser, Doctor's surgery and chemist. In 1968, the Co-op was taken over by Wesfarmers Stores and a subsequent series of supermarket chains; Charlie Carters, Supavalue, Xtra Value and the current occupiers, Foodland.
