Statement of Significance

The homestead has a distinctive aesthetic quality with its richly textured walls of mud and stone surrounded by low verandahs.,
The plan form displays the simplicity typical of the Pilbara homesteads:- the succession of rooms opening onto the verandahs, the separation of the sleeping
the kitchen block and the absence of passages or entry halls are witness to
this simplicity.
The varying wall construction, rammed pindan mud in the earlier sections and stone in cement in later sections, displays changes in local building techniques over the
years.
The homestead reflects the simplicity of station life in the Pilbara over the years and the emphasis on- outdoor - verandah living.
Boodarie is one of the early stations to be established in the district while over the years the buildings have been added to the earliest portion of rammed pindan mud
which dates from early 1900's.

Physical Description

The homestead consists of two buildings. The building to the east contains two bedrooms and a living room. The western building contains the kitchen and dining room. The space between the buildings is roofed and her much of the living is done.
.The eastern end of the bedroom block was the first part to be constructed and has walls of mud. the kitchen was next to be constructed with walls of stone laid in cement. The bedroom wing was then extended toward the kitchen block with walls of stone. The mud walls of the earlier eastern end of this block were then rendered to simulate the surface of the new stone walls.
The walls are corrugated iron hipped roofs with steep pitch over the core of each block and flatter pitch over the verandah and verandah rooms. The bedroom - living room block has level ripple iron ceilings and the kitchen block has no ceiling. The verandah posts are steel and of various cross-sections.

History

Assessment 1983
Construction 1900's
Boodarie was the homestead for the extensive leases taken up west and south of Port Hedland in the 1870's by A.R . Richardson and J. Wellard. In 1901 the property was bought by J .E. Richardson and the brothers, T.A . & A .E. Hardie. In 1903 it was divided, J.E. Richardson taking the eastern section which he called Pippingarra and the .Hardies retaining Boodarie. Later Boodarie was divided again, the southern half becoming Indee Station. The original Boodarie is still occupied by a member of the Hardie family.
