Statement of Significance

137 Throssell Street, Collie, a single storey brick and iron commercial building has cultural heritage significance for its long association with the hardware and plumbing industry and with plumbers Mr WG Luce and Mr Henderson who both operated from the site.

Physical Description

The red brick single storey shop is attached on the east side to a residence, 135 Throssell Street. The shop has a glazed front with metal signage above, on a suspended roof that projects over the pavement. No steel rods are visible. The parapet above is featureless painted render. Behind the parapet is a red corrugated iron hipped roof. There are modification to the west side with a steel shelter attached.

History

Street addresses are not included in the Post Office Directories until 1934. William J Henderson, plumber is listed in 1933 and in 1934 but not at a specific address. In 1936 and 1937 he is listed at 3 Medic Street. In 1938, William Henderson, plumber is listed at 85 Throssell Street with his private residence at 84 Throssell Street. Both these listings continue until the Post Office Directory listings cease in 1949.
Mr WG Luce, a plumber who is recorded as living in a house at the then 86 Throssell Street (now 139 Throssell Street) is thought to have operated from this property prior to Mr Henderson, perhaps since 1923. Mr Luce died in 1937 having worked until a few days before his death. It is likely that Mr Henderson relocated to this site, taking over the business, following Mr Luce’s death.
The business was advertised for lease in April 1951 with J Henderson as the contact.
William Joseph Henderson was operating a plumbing business in Collie in 1953.
The store continues to operate as Henderson Hardware in 2017.
