SIGNIFICANT AS A HISTORIC SITE Historic site without built features or with association to an historic personage. Recognise the site with a plaque, place name, paving stone or appropriate marker.

Statement of Significance

The site, and particularly the trees, have local historic significance for their associations with the former
stock/sale yards and the railway precinct (see Site Nos. 77, 78, 80, 134 & 135) and should be protected.

Physical Description

The site of the former sale yards is marked by two large lemon scented gum trees and two other trees, though to
be sugar gums. The site of the saleyards, adjacent to the old railway line, is now occupied by the Pioneer Lodge
Retirement Home.

History

Elder Smith & Co purchased this block of land from H. O. Haselby and stock yards were built by T. P. Crothers. The
first stock sale was held on 14 July 1926.
The existing large lemon scented gums were planted by Mr F. Cuneo, former Secretary of the Road Board.(Source:
