Statement of Significance

This building has historic, social and aesthetic heritage characteristics
valued by the Denmark community. The CWA is an organisation that
has been active in Denmark since 1934. It has enhanced the lives of
many families in the district through times of depression, fire and
war. The rooms gave rest and shelter to many women and children on
shopping or market days. It has been a meeting place for many groups
and organisations e.g. Child Health Sister, Kindergarten, Courts, Rural
Youth, Lodge, RSL, ANZACc and Church Services. It has been used to
cater for emergencies such as fires and searches. Talks of educational
value are also held there. The CWA has been instrumental in supplying
help to many in need and distress.

Physical Description

The CWA facility consists of an entrance hall where small meetings
are held, with a large hall and kitchen. There is a small room off the
kitchen with a servery into the large hall. There is a storeroom off the
back verandah and toilet facilities. The building is close to the school,
police station, ambulance and Red Cross organisation. The construction
materials include fibro and weatherboard walls, wooden framed windows
and a corrugated iron roof.

History

The CWA rooms consist of an old Group Settlement cottage resited
from Lloyds Hill (now known as Silver Road) and a large hall built from
materials from a dismantled school in Strickland Street, Denmark. The
first part was opened in 1948 and the larger hall in 1952.
