Aesthetically significant as an example of Fremantle’s vernacular architecture. Typical single storey stone cottage in the Victorian Georgian style of architecture dating from 1891. Historically significant as a representation of working people’s living conditions in the Fremantle area.
House, 234a High Street (originally 234 High St, until subdivision) is a single storey stone and corrugated iron hipped roof house. The roof has two rendered chimneys with corbelling and extends over the verandah which is supported by timber posts.
There is a unit development at the rear and east side of the house.
The following places form a significant group and contribute to the streetscape of High Street; 222-224, 234, 238 & 254.
As was customary in English towns, the main street of the town was named High St.
In 1891 there was a two bedroom, one kitchen cottage owned and occupied by Samuel Nugent, a storeman. The 1892 rate books record Nugent residing in a five room cottage and in 1896 Mrs Jane Nugent, a widow is listed as the owner/occupier. The next owner was Michael Samson in 1899 and the tenant was Adolph Wittorff, a butcher and by 1905/06 the tenant was William Caldwell, a mechanic.
The cottage was originally 472 and in 1938 changed to 234 High Street and is Lot 1007.
Two colour photos from 1978 are in the LHC Blue File.
High degree of integrity (original intent clear, current use compatible, high long term sustainability).
High degree of authenticity with much original fabric remaining.
(These statements based on street survey only).
Condition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).
