Statement of Significance

The Bakery has historic significance for its connection to the commercial development of the town, being the bakery for more than 75 years. The character of the building is diminished due to the modifications to the front facade.

Physical Description

The front section of the building has been extensively modified, the front facade being constructed of brick, fibro and shadowline metal sheet. The original twin gable corrugated iron roof is visible behind the shadowline parapet. The gable ends are clad with vertical and horizontal corrugated iron. The original stone wall to the south-west corner of the building has been rendered. The original openings are believed to have brick quoins.

History

The stone section of the bakery and butcher's shop was built about 1900 by William Criddle who leased it to Thomas Rowland. In after a major fire in 1927, the bakehouse was rebuilt, bread was then sold from a shop on Moreton Terrace. Over the years many alterations have been made to the building. In 1967 bread was sold from the side verandah of the living quarters. After Bob Leonard bought the building, the shop was altered and extended to include a shop with an entry from Waldeck Street.
