This building has significant aesthetic. historic. representative and rarity cultural heritage value, It has
imponant streetscapc value particularly in the context of the well known Windsor Theatre to the east, Along
with a few other buildings in Stirling Highway (eg. Sol Cafe and Nedlands Post Office), the Persian Carpel
Gallery and the Windsor Theatre reinforce an Inter-War theme in the streetscape. The structure is a fine and
rare representative of a style that reflected European modern architecture of the 1920s and 1930s.
This building is constructed of colourwashed rendered brick with metal windows and linear fenestration.
The two storey commercial building has a number of decorative elements applied to the basic structure. It
has a number of exterior characteristics that justifies its Art Deco classification - asymmetrical massing of
SImple geometric shapes. contrasting horizontal and vertical motifs, large area of glass. clean lines. roof
concealed behind Ihe parapet. cantilevered hood and curved facade.
The shop that today (1998) houses the Persian Carpet Gallery was designed by architect, W G Leighton.
W G Leighton was a prominent architect in the Inter-War period. who is also considered to be responsible for
the design of the Windsor Theatre which is next door to the Persian Carpet Gallery.
