The place contributes to the overall townscape of Fremantle, and in particular to the Holdsworth Street and Knutsford Street streetscapes.
The place has some landmark value due to its corner entry statement and location on a triangular block at the meeting point of Knutsford and Holdsworth Streets.
The place has associations with the development of Fremantle since the nineteenth century.
This place is representative of workers houses constructed in Fremantle from the nineteenth century on.
The place is located on a triangular block of land between Knutsford and Holdsworth Streets. Steps lead up from the street corner to the higher land on which the residence is located.
The place is a single storey residence of stone construction with a cgi roof. The place has additions to the rear. There is a verandah to the front of the house, which features a timber balustrade, timber posts and iron frieze.
The front of the house is largely obscured by trees.
Economic prosperity due to the discovery of gold in the 1880s and 1890s together with the completion of the Fremantle Inner Harbour in 1897 gave impetus to the development of Fremantle as the principal port for the state. As part of Fremantle’s development, the larger suburban lots on its outer fringes were subdivided to produce lots on which residences could be erected for the town’s businessmen and workers.
Very little is known about the development of the place. The MHI database suggests that the place was constructed in the 1900s. Physical evidence indicates that the place has elements of residences dating from either the Victorian Georgian and Federation periods and could therefore have an earlier construction date. (There are houses dating from the 1870s period in Holdsworth Street.)
The place was subject to additions in 1978.
In 1990 the place received a City of Fremantle Conservation Incentives Award.
In 2003 the place appears to have been converted into 2 residences.
