Statement of Significance

The place demonstrates an association with the first banking institution in the state, and a continuing association with commerce in Narembeen. It demonstrates a way of life no longer practiced.

Physical Description

Bank chamber and residence Current Use: Retail outlet and residence Description: The frontage of the Banking Chamber demonstrates a classical design agenda. It is symmetrical with a central entry. The front parapet wall is stepped in the centre and a pediment is central over the door which also has a horizontal "eyebrow" detail. Each side of the slightly recessed entry section of the frontage is a bay with a central window. The entire frontage is cement rendered. The timber framed, weatherboard and iron residence was existing when the bank was built, adjoining, in front of it on the north west corner. The re

History

The Western Australian Bank opened on 26 June 1841. In 1922 a sub-branch of the bank operated in Narembeen, from a branch in Bruce Rock. In 1924 a Narembeen Branch of the Western Australian Bank opened, and operated an agency at South Kumminin. In 1927 the bank amalgamated with, and became known as, the Bank of New South Wales. In 1928 the Banking Chamber was added to the existing Bank house. It continued to operate as a bank until it was converted to a private residence and business.
