The construction of the building is of interest as it was designed and prefabricated in Germany, shipped to Australia and erected on the Brown Hill Mining lease as an Assay Office in 1900. It is unusual - now unique in Kalgoorlie with its elevated roof extending over and beyond the top and walls of the main building to serve as a breezeway. It is historically important for its association first with the Brown Hill Mine and later with the Kalgoorlie Hospital.
The building is of weatherboard (spruce from the Black Forest in Germany) with a corrugated iron roof and wooden floors throughout. The roof is elevated above the ceiling of the main structure and extends to cover the verandahs, to form a breezeway and keep the interior cool. At each end of the roof is a carved wooden gable end.
The front and part of the side verandah have been enclosed but these additions could easily be removed to return it to the original form. The condition of the building is good as it has been well maintained.
