The site is significant due to its association with the building of the Great Southern
Railway.
Located close to the north west end of Round Pool on the Boyerine Creek. The well site
is on the south west bank of the creek. Due to this position it has filled with silt over the
years since it was dug.
The area shows evidence of salt encroachment and it is believed that the water in the well
was originally saline, or went so shortly after.
The building of The Great Southern Railway in the late 1880's required large gangs of
workers (navvies) who required water for the campsites. As work on the railway began
simultaneously at the extremities (Beverley and Albany) the section in the centre would
have been last carried out. As the railway opened in June 1889 it is likely that this well
was dug the preceding summer.
