The Advocate building has historical significance as a newspaper office since being built in 1893. It is aesthetically pleasing and contributes to the streetscape of the main commercial street of Northam.
The Advocate building is a single storey masonry building. The symmetrical facade is dominated by four prominent horizontal banded pilasters, each topped with a decorative element, below the cornice 'beam' bearing the names of the establishment. Between the pilasters, the central door opening and flanking windows are recessed.
This building has housed the local newspaper office since it first started as the Central Districts Advertiser in 1893. The Northam Advertiser, as it was later called, was influential in the rise and fall of eminent Northam politicians such as George Throssell and James Mitchell over the years. The founding editor, J T O'Reilly was a controversial character, and the newspaper has played a significant role in the development of Northam for more than a century. One of the editors was Hal Colbatch who served a very brief term as Premier of Western Australia. It is now only an office for the Avon Advocate Newspaper. Production and printing of the newspaper are carried out elsewhere.
