It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Inter-War Californian Bungalow style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 5 Dorothy Street is a single storey, brick and iron house with an asymmetrical facade designed as an example of the Interwar Californian Bungalow style of architecture. The walls are face brick. The roof is hipped and gabled and clad with corrugated iron. The gable end features decorative timber elements and finial above the protruding front room. The front elevation has a central front door with side and fanlights flanked on one side by a double hung sash window. The verandah has a continuous corrugated iron roof and is supported by timber posts with a simple timber cross style balustrade. The house sits on a limestone foundation and is slightly elevated on one side as the building follows the fall of the land. There is a window in the foundation indicating the existence of a basement. There is an extension at the rear which has been matched to the face brick. There is a brick pillar and timber picket fence to the front boundary line.

History

The land on which House 5 Dorothy Street stands was vacant in 1910/11 and owned by Rachael Evans. In 1928 ownership transferred to Walter James Leaves, who built a house by 12 December 1928. The house was originally number 15, on Lot 12 of 891, but originally known as Lot 11/12 of 891.
In 1930/31 Leaves’ tenant was George A McLean. By 1935/36 Susan Mills was the owner and William Henry Hopkinson the tenant.
House, 5 Dorothy Street has three cellars; one has standing room, and in 1984 functioned as a workshop and tool shed. The second is of a similar size but with a low ceiling and the third would be smaller and suitable for a wine cellar.
