The place is considered to have some significance to the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder: to be retained and conserved if possible, and the conservation of the significance of the place should also be encouraged. It is recommended that prior to any major changes, or demolition, that a photographic record be taken of the place.

Statement of Significance

The place makes a valued contribution to the visual character of the Hannan Street with its verandah and verandah fascia over the pavement, and for its decorative parapet. The site is representative of retailing at the turn-of-the-century and is significant for its form and continuity of use.

Physical Description

Physical Evidence: A single-storey building built to the building line of Hannan Street.

The feature of the exterior of the building is a fair-faced decorative parapet, now painted, and the rendered relief work. A louvred vent in the gable wall suggests an upper level within the roof space.

The original two recessed entrances with large display windows with stall boards below and highlight windows are no longer extant. The shopfront has been remodelled and comprises a single entrance.

A verandah roof extends across the facade and over the pavement. The fascia appears as it did in 1935 (for photographic evidence, see Laurie, 1995: 47).

History

The building was originally constructed in 1899, as a tearoom and fruit shop for Silbert and Sharp. It was later taken over by Albany Bells and then by Tippetts (Pastrycooks, Confectioners and Caterers) who served light lunches and tea until the early 1970s and Ascot's 'Model Salon'. Ownership changed several times but the type of business continued. More recently, the place functions as a stationery shop (Laurie, 1995: 47).

General Comments: During the 1890s and particularly in the early 1900s, Kalgoorlie's population swelled by a steady influx of men seeking employment in the goldfields and somewhere to settle. This increase in population had a great influence on the town's growth. It necessitated the survey of more town and suburban lots, increased subsidies for road construction and numerous buildings were constructed.
