Statement of Significance

A solid if pompous civic building complete with original character and Edwardian grandeur, particularly internally.

Physical Description

A grand two storey building housing the Council Chambers, the Mayor's Parlour, a banqueting room and the Town Hall auditorium and stage facilities. The Hannan St facade is stuccoed brick with new-classical decoration - pilasters, balustrades, arched openings and a pediment with carved scrollwork and coat of arms over the main entrance. The Wilson St facade is flat rendered brick work with no decoration.
The ceiling of the Town Hall is particularlu noteworthy being painted pressed metal. A back wall was razed by cyclone. The building is still used as planned.
