City of Armadale

Statement of Significance

Thomas Buckingham Cottage Ruins, Stone Dam and Stone Walls, Roleystone, is associated with the first European land grants in the colony and the early European settlement of the Roleystone and Armadale districts of Western Australia. It is also associated with the early struggles and failures by settlers to estabish and develop farming land. The archaeological record associated with the place is likely to include surface scatters and intact subsurface archaeological deposits associated with the construction and occupation of the place. The place has the ability to provide information on the lives and activities of Western Australia's early settlers.

Physical Description

The place comprises the ruins of two stone buildings, a stone dam structure and the remnants of a series of dry stone walls, situated in an open wooded setting that extends across two lots south of the Canning River in the suburb of Roleystone. There is a high probability that intact archaeological deposits are present in and around both ruins.

History

The property was first settled by the Buckingham family in 1861. The Buckinghams farmed cattle and other produce on the farm, but had little success, and the sons began to cart timber from Bickley to Canning River. The family sold the property in the mid 1880s, and it passed through a number of hands, gradually subdividing into smaller lots for predominately farming uses. It is currenlty located across two lots and not currently being farmed.
