House, 17 Burt Street is a fine example of a stone residence representing the expansion of Fremantle in the gold boom period of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.
House, 17 Burt Street: Single storey painted stone with painted brick quoining to the corners and window and door openings of the house. The hipped terracotta tiled (probably not original) roof has a chimney with corbelling extant, The verandah returns down the sides and there is a timber and wire fence extant.
Burt Street is likely named after Chief Justice Sir Archibald Paull Burt, who came to Fremantle in 1861 from the West Indies. His son, Septimus Burt, became the first Attorney-General under Responsible Government.
House, 17 Burt Street: Lot 7 of 864 was a vacant lot in 1900 owned by Walter Powell. In 1901/02 a cottage was built for J S Richards, an accountant by profession. John Ernest Gustafson occupied the house in 1905/06. He was a teacher at Fremantle Boys School. He was a prominent member of the community and campaigned for a dental clinic for underprivileged children that became known as the Gustafson dental clinic. He was also a councillor and an Australian and state champion bowler.
