The site is significant due to its association with the horticultural industry in the district and with pioneering families.
Bill Mader was one of three brothers of German origin who came to the district from Burra, South Australia. They selected and developed their own farms after working in the district for some years.
Initially, Bill and his wife Lavinia settled on a block on Orchard Road where he built a mud batt house. Bill and his family later moved to north of Robinson Road, about a mile west of Fred (his elder brother). Bill and Lavinia had nine children most of whom attended the Westwood School (1919-1928). The eldest, Edward, in 1909 later farmed at 'Circle Valley' Orchard Road for a period. A son of Bill and Lavinia Mader now farms the Douglas Road property.
