Statement of Significance

Building forms part of remnant building stock which makes up historic town's fabric.

Physical Description

Large single-storey brick and iron house with two symmetrical gables with timber awnings over a group of four 8 pane windows. Narrow verandah decorated with timber fretwork leads to central front door with fanlight and sidelights. Facade brickwork is rendered over top half.

History

Home of Marmaduke and Philomena Terry. Mr Terry, a surveyor, married youngest daughter of Alfred Pickmore and Ellen Bussell of Wallcliffe. Built grand home next door to Ellen's cousins. House had large entry foyer with marble fireplaces and servants' quarters.

In 1918 it was used as a hospital by Nurse Beck for many years. The front section of the house is an obvious addition in 1918-20. In the 1920s, Nurse Beck added quarters to her live-in.

In 1940s used as boarding house and known locally as 'The Flats'.
