The place makes a valued contribution to the visual character of the Hannan Street streetscape with its barrel vault verandah roof over the pavement, and for its rendered parapet. The site is representative of retailing at the turn-of-the-century and is significant for its form and continuity of use.
A single-storey shop with a two-storey residential section at the rear built to the building line of Hannan and Porter Streets.
The feature of the exterior of the building is a barrel vault verandah roof that wraps the original facade and extends over the pavement. The cover is supported by cast metal circular columns with decorative capitals. The columns also feature in the interior along with a decorative pressed metal ceiling.
Alterations have occurred in the interior, and the building has been extended down Porter Street.
Montgomery Bros conducted business in other parts of the goldfields dating back to 1893, and bought their Kalgoorlie premises in 1902, from the original owners, Alexander and Gaillard (Laurie, 1995: 48).
General Comments: During the 1890s, and particularly in the early 1900s, Kalgoorlie's population swelled by a steady influx of men seeking employment in the goldfields and somewhere to settle. This increase in population had a great influence on the town's growth. It necessitated the survey of more town and suburban lots, increased subsidies for road construction and numerous buildings were constructed.
