The place is representative of the type of commercial premises built in the late 20th century period that provided a mix of retail and office premises.
The place has social value for the many members of the community for its continuity of function and contribution to the sense of place of the Hay Street Mall.
External - Distinctive multi-storey building in a corner position, extending over basement, ground and four upper stories. The place is distinctive in the streetscape for its architectural style and is constructed of reinforced concrete. The shop front has been remodelled. The upper floors present as originally constructed with aluminium framed windows creating a regular rhythm to the elevations.
Internal - The ground floor retail space has a contemporary fitout with suspended ceilings and new floor wall and floor treatments. Evidence of previous retail fitouts remain evident on upper floors. The stairwell has the original timber balustrade. The bathrooms retain the granolithic cubicles. The offices are simple in their presentation with carpeted floors, plastered and painted walls and acoustic tiled ceilings. There is evidence of some alteration to the plan form at upper levels with infill sections.
This building was constructed in the 1970s and includes no evidence of the former building on this site. The Bank of New South Wales occupied the building in 1970 as shown in a photo from the State Library of WA collection.
High level of integrity.
Medium level of authenticity. The structure of the building has been little altered. Finishes externally have changed. All evidence of bank use at ground floor level has been removed following the adaptation of the place for retail use.
