Statement of Significance

House, 13 Price Street, is a typical weatherboard and iron single storey house dating from 1921/22 . The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area.

Physical Description

13 Price Street is a single storey weatherboard and iron house with an asymmetrical façade constructed in the Inter War period. The walls are timber framed and clad with weatherboards. The roof is hipped and gabled with corrugated iron. There is a protruding front room with a gable above. The verandah is supported by fluted moulded plaster columns. Windows are double hung sashes. There is a brick and render wall to the front boundary line.

History

This house was formerly 19 Price Street. The street numbering changed 1934/35. The street had formerly been Lord Street and was changed to Price Street in 1908/09 in honour of James Price, MLA for Fremantle 1905 to 1920 and the Minister for Works 1906 to 1909. The previous name was used to represent the title held by the persons after whom the adjoining streets were named ie: Grey and Russell.
House, 13 Price Street was built in 1921 for Rebecca J Hankinson for a cost of £650. Edwin Hankinson lived at the house until c. 1928.
A photograph of the house in 1978 shows the timber and iron house in good condition. The brick front wall has a decorative pattern on the top and a metal gate. The front verandah has a brick wall, which may be of a later design.
This place was identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80 as being of cultural heritage significance. (Coded: Red: "Significantly contributing to the unique character of Fremantle")
