Considerable Significance

DESCRIPTION: Very important to the heritage of the locality. High degree of integrity/ authenticity. DESIRED OUTCOME: Conservation of the place is highly desirable. Any alterations or extensions should reinforce the significance of the place.

Statement of Significance

The Denmark Co-op has historic representative and social significance. The building, though not of a strong architectural design, is representative of the development that occurred in the 1950s in Denmark. The historic and social value of the co-op is important as it reflects the unity of the town to provide services in a rural town performed continuously since the 1950s.

Physical Description

The Co-op is situated on a prominent corner of the Highway and Strickland St. The single storey brick building has a flat roof and a corner entry. The cantilevered verandah is a significant feature from the original design in 1956.

Since 1956 the facade has changed very little but extensive internal structural changes have been made since that time. The mezzanine floor was relocated to the ground floor and new refrigeration and fruit/ vegetables displays were installed. Computerised stocktaking and cash registers were installed in 1977.

History

The Denmark Co-op was built in the 1950s and opened in 1956. They had relocated from their site which they had used since the 1920s. This site is where Denmark Real Estate stands in 2009. The Co-op is a community business run by a committee and operated on a base of shares. In 2008 the food side of the business was not performing well and the Board decided to close down the grocery side and concentrate on hardware and drapery.
