Statement of Significance

Notable as outbuildings on a very early settlement site in the Williams area and the original
selector, Michael Quinn was a prominent citizen for many years (1860-1903).

Physical Description

'Glenfield', 12 kms SE of Williams.
The sheds are some 150-200 metres north of the house on the same hill slope and elevation.
The chaff shed has a hip roof and is approx 40ft x 20ft (13m x 6.5m). Large bush timer uprights
support the structure and are spaced about 1.2 to 2 metres apart on the west side where there is one
door. The corrugated iron wall cladding is attached on the inside of the support timbers to provide
a flush internal finish.
The stables are a lean to attached to the east side of the chaff shed with approx the same floor
space. Remnants of a post and rail yards (closer to the homestead) which served as a milking shed
and yard should be preserved if possible, being as one of the few original posts using this style of
yards.

History

In contrast to other early settlers eg the Hamersley family, Quinn was an agriculturalist and
pastoralist running sheep in preference to horses.
He was a successful tenderer for the supply of hay and barley to the police stations as early as 1863.
In addition to his pastoral leases stretching over a wide area, Quinn owned 'Ballagin' on the
Walcott Plains near the junction of the Buchanan and Arthur Rivers. (1)
