The City of Fremantle has identified this place as being of considerable cultural heritage significance in its own right within the context of Fremantle and its conservation is a priority.

Statement of Significance

Aesthetically significant as a fine example of Fremantle’s vernacular architecture. Typical single storey cottage dating from the first decades of the twentieth century. Historically significant as a representation of working people’s living conditions in the Fremantle area.

Physical Description

Single storey rendered with ashlar effect and painted corrugated iron hipped roof house. The roof has a rendered chimney with corbelling and extends over the verandah, which returns on the north side and is supported by turned timber collared posts. There are remnants of timber balustrades.

History

McCleery Street was named after John McCleery, a Fremantle merchant and auctioneer from 1879 to 1889. He died in 1911.
House, 9 McCleery Street was first recorded on Lot 10B of 31 of 7 in 1900. The owner/occupier was James Adams, a Customs worker.
