Statement of Significance

The lake side precinct is of considerable significance in demonstrating ways of life and pastimes no longer practised. The place demonstrates associations with the earliest pioneers and settlers from all periods of development.

Physical Description

public space: meeting camping Current Use: public space: sport & recreation Description: Grassed sloping banks of the lakes edge, with a sandy beach along the waters edge. The jetty is a one metre wide timber structure extending approximately 50 metres into the lake. A swimming area has been delineated by sand banks enclosing the area.

History

In 1906 the area was surveyed, and the first agricultural selections were first taken up in November 1907. The lake was an obvious source of fresh water for the surrounding settlers. The lake has been the venue of many recreational and sporting pursuits since the earliest days. Kangaroo hunting, duck shooting, sailing and boating , swimming, jumping off the jetty, picnics, and cruising on the steamer "Kookaburra" in the 1930s. The first jetty was built in 1921 in time for a sailing carnival. It has been reconstructed a number of times. A Golf club, tennis courts and croquet club have all been established at different times on the foreshore of the Lake. Even before the advent of the trains, annual events at the foreshore were popular throughout the district; the Boxing Day, and Railway picnics, New Years Eve ball, and when the train was able to transport the people, it was even more popular. The lake still provides a recreational venue for the people of Yealering and districts.
