Statement of Significance

The place is of historic significance as a community association hall provided for the newly emerging Hilton community in the late 1950s by the Hilton Progress Association and the City of Fremantle.

Physical Description

Hilton Progress Hall is included in the precinct listing for Hilton Central Area Precinct.

Hilton Progress Hall was built as part of the military camp at Northam. It was moved to the Melville Migrant Camp for use as a recreational hall before it was relocated to Paget Street, Hilton, for use as a community hall. The building is a single storey timber weatherboard and iron gabled roofed building. There is a brick addition to the front that was built to accommodate toilets and change rooms. In 1994, a curved corrugated iron verandah with steel posts was added to the façade. The design of the new entrance was developed through the collaboration of community members, artists and relevant Council staff.

Hilton Progress Hall was built as part of the military camp at Northam. It was moved to the Melville Migrant Camp for use as a recreational hall before it was relocated to Paget Street, Hilton, for use as a community hall.

The Hilton Park Progress Association was actively responsible for obtaining and relocating the building, with the financial assistance of the City of Fremantle. Council architect, Mr C Nicholas (of the local firm Allen and Nicholas Architects) drew up plans for the brick toilet and change room addition the front. The Public Works Department laid a water service to the boundary of the lot, so that water could be connected to the hall.

Following the 1992 Federal Government allocation of Local Capital Works Grants to Local Government, the City of Fremantle allocated $60,000 of its $1.4m grant to upgrade Hilton Progress Hall. The works included re-flooring, conversion of the supper room to two activity/meeting rooms, upgrading of the toilets and building a toilet for people with disabilities, a new entry way, kitchen renovation and new guttering.

In 1993, the City of Fremantle (as owner) applied for alterations and additions to the hall, including the addition of a verandah on the façade and landscaping to the front of the lot. The design of the new entrance was developed through the collaboration of community members, artists and relevant Council staff. It followed the City’s Community Environment Art and Design (CEAD) principles and was considered to be a good outcome for the building and community. Work was completed in 1994.

Adopted to MHI 2000. Council resolved at its meeting on 23/08/2006 that consideration for modification to the MHI be deferred.
