Statement of Significance

The place is a representative example of the architectural improvisation of structures built to accommodate miners. The place has historic value for its representation of the development of the Australian goldfields and associated social conditions for miners. The place is historically significant for its relationship with mining operations that took place at Gwalia between 1898-1963, one of the most productive gold mines outside Kalgoorlie.

Physical Description

The original cottage has a high-pitched gabled roof with a bullnosed verandah roof that extends across the front elevation, and a rear concrete verandah that is now covered with a lean-to roof.
The interior comprises a central passage with bedrooms at the front of the cottage either side of the passage. A separate kitchen and bathroom are at the rear of the cottage. A small room has been created in the enclosed rear verandah.
The interior walls are timber framed and lined with ripple iron. The place retains an original kitchen stove, internal doors, internal door furniture, timber floors and jarrah roof timbers.
The front verandah has been enclosed with weatherboard cladding and has louvred windows. The verandah floor is now covered with carpet and the roof of die original building has been re-clad. The bathroom has been upgraded, including new plumbing , and finishes, and new fittings have been installed to the bathroom and kitchen (date of alterations in unknown).
Outbuildings include what is believed to be an original W.C., and a shed that is in poor condition.
The passage was originally hessian lined, but in 1992, was reclad in plywood. Also in 1992, new paved garden
paths were laid, trees were planted, air conditioning was installed, and the place was repainted.
