The place represent a way of life associated with early settlement and early identities.
The six room dwelling was surrounded by a verandah under the main roof, at break pitch. It was timber framed and weatherboard clad with an iron roof. In 1936, a timber verandah floor replaced the anthill floor. In the 1950's. A balustrade was erected around the verandah.
John Smiley Boyd came from Northen Ireland in 1911 and began work almost immediately at Padbury's property in Moora before moving to Bruce Rock to work for Charles Smith at Yarding. During the two years he was there, he took up land. By 1919, he and his wife purchased a larger block from Owen Hughes, with a dwelling on site. By 1924, he constructed his own home.
