Garrick Theatre, a single-storey brick walled, corrugated iron roofed Colonial Georgian style building, has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons:
Its association with the establishment of the convict depot in Guildford which introduced a major change in the way the affairs of the colony were conducted;
It demonstrates the transition from an impoverished economy to the more affluent period following the arrival of the convicts bringing an influx of capital and cheap labour;
Its aesthetic characteristics imparted by the simplicity of the Colonial Georgian architecture and the pleasant texture and warmth of colouring of the mellow brickwork;
Its contribution to the scale and quality of the streetscape of the Meadow Street precinct; and,
Its association with Lieutenant Du Cane.
Commissariat Store and Quarters constructed in 1853 from local clay bricks. Present roof is iron over timber boards. Original building was 'L' shaped, the front being Commissariat Quarters and rear convict store. Windows, doors and verandah to street are original. Commissariat Quarters are only part of depot remaining apart from Lt. Du Cane's house (14 Meadow St), adjacent to the building. He supervised construction of the building with convict labour.
Meadow Street frontage was original frontage for Commissariat Clerk Mr Lewis Duval who kept accounts of provisions held for convict depot and issued pay and provisions to ticket-of-leave men. His two rooms were converted to a house.
Store is now used as Garrick Theatre, seating 100 people. Rear foyer was added 1980s and verandah (replica of front building) in 1993.
Deteriorating clay brick requires expert repair, although main structure is sound and aesthetically pleasing.
