Statement of Significance

House, 16 Russell Street, is a rendered masonry and iron single storey house dating from c1880s. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of larger houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.

Physical Description

16 Russell Street is a single storey, rendered masonry and iron house with a symmetrical facade designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are rendered masonry. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. The facade has a central front door with fanlight flanked either side by double hung sash windows. The verandah has a separate corrugated iron roof and is supported by square timber posts. There is a rendered masonry wall to the front boundary line.

History

House, 16 Russell Street was formerly numbered 34 Russell Street; the renumbering occurred in 1935/36.
This house is one of several adjacent properties in Russell Street that were owned and probably built by contractor James Cornish. The houses which are currently, (2007) numbered 14 and 16 Russell Street are the remaining houses of several dwellings that were present on these lots. In the early years of the City of Fremantle rates books there is not in sufficient detail to establish the exact date of construction of each cottage. Further research of the rates books and certificates of title for this year would help to establish the exact date of construction of this house.
From the available information it is assumed that this house was built in the 1880s. In 1895, there were five cottages on the lots were owned by James Thorpe and James Cornish. Two of these cottages were occupied by Thorpe and Cornish and the remaining were leased.
Later owners of the house have been Mrs Neil Johnssen, A. A. Thorpe; Daisy Victoria Robins and Francisco Carrello. In 1951/2, the house is recorded as 16 Russell Street and is owned by Antonina Carrello and occupied by Colgera Minuta.
The 1908 sewerage plan of the site shows this brick house. The house has a verandah at the front and rear and a separate timber and brick dwelling in the back yard. In the back yard are two timber closets. The two parts of the back yard are separately fenced.
This place was identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80 as being of cultural heritage significance. (Coded: Brown: "Positively contributing to the built environment")
A photograph of the house in 1978 shows that the front verandah roof had been tiled and the boundary fence and verandah enclosure were brick walls of a later design. The front windows also appear to have been replaced.
