Statement of Significance

The site represents the education system of a way of life no longer practiced. It represents the community co-operation and the value of education.

History

Schools were usually established due to lobbying from the members of the relevant community when they recognised a need for a school in their district. Education for their children was an important priority to the settlers. When the Government did establish schools, a minimum number of 8 students was required to retain the services of a teacher and keep the school operating. After World war two, school bus services began operating, and children from outlying areas were transported to the centrally located schools, and the small schools closed.
The first school in South Kumminin opened in the hall in 1925, and continued until 1932 when it was temporarily closed at that venue while efforts were made to establish a school building. In 1934 the Mt Arrowsmith School was relocated to South Kumminin and the school continued to operate through the war years until 1949 when the school bus service transported the children to Narembeen School.
