Statement of Significance

The place demonstrates associations with commercial development
in Kulin and represents a way of life no longer practiced.

Physical Description

Timber framed and fibro-clad with "brick" cladding on the front facade. Aluminium
framed shop windows flank the central double doors on the frontage. The gable corrugated iron roof
has vents along the ridge. A small awning extends across the shopfront, replacing the original
verandah.

History

The Bank of Australasia originally established a branch in this
building, and the manager lived at the rear of the building. The bank was closed during World War
Two. In 1951/52, John McWilliams opened the place as a cafe which continued under various
owners until 1961/62 when H Watson purchased the place and converted it into the Doctor's surgery
which operated until 1968 when the Shire established doctor's rooms in the vacated Roads Board
offices.. In 1970 it was again bought and renovated and converted to a cafe by Nick Bacich. It now
functions as a hairdressing salon.
