House, 17 Charles Street, is an unusual rendered masonry single storey house dating from c1891. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. The place has some rarity value. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.
17 Charles Street is a single storey, rendered masonry house with a symmetrical facade and side skillion built in 1891 and designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are rendered masonry with a parapet to the front facade. The roof is behind the parapet. The front façade has a central front door and double hung sash windows. There is a skillion section to the side. There is no verandah and the house is constructed on the front boundary line. There are two rendered and corbelled chimneys with pots evident.
Charles Street was largely developed in the last decade of the nineteenth century and much of the housing stock still dates from this time.
House, 17 Charles Street was built in 1891 for James Caporn, a baker. Other small cottages were built on the lot at the same time, but these have been demolished. James Caporn lived in the house until c. 1925, and by 1930/31, it was owned and occupied by Ann Smith. At this time, it was numbered 23 Charles Street.
A Metropolitan Sewerage plan dated 1954 shows House, 17 Charles Street as a small brick house built to the street boundary, with an asbestos addition to the side and weatherboard additions at the rear.
By the early 1950s, the house was owned by George Harris and occupied by Donald Harris. This continued to be the situation into the 1960s. In 1981, House, 17 Charles Street was still owned by the Harris family.
This place was identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80 as being of cultural heritage significance. (Coded: Brown: "Positively contributing to the built environment")
