Category 2

Buildings which also contribute to the character and atmosphere of Peppermint Grove. These buildings may be altered or extended in a manner which recognises and retains some original features or which may be demolished, but the replacement building should recognise by its position the adjoining residence and precinct. The owner to provide an archival record for any building demolished under this category and the Shire to provide a plaque for inclusion in the adjoining footpath to recognise the cultural significance of the property.

Statement of Significance

This two storey rendered brick, timber, metal and tiled roof
residence, in the InterWar Functionalist/Mediterranean style,
has cultural significancebecause:
- it has long historical associations with Sir Norman
Brearley, founder of the first air mail service inWestern
Australia, and lesser associations with the McNeil and
Fairbairn families;
- it has some aesthetic significancebecause it is an early
example of the InterWar Modernist style, modified by
the InterWar Mediterannean style.

Physical Description

The residence is one of the first to be constructed in an InterWar Modernist style, albeit modified by the roof form
more typical of the InterWar Mediterranean style. The
emphasis on upper floor living with its large panoramic
windows, wide balcony and trim styling made it an
appropriate expression for an aviator.

History

The land was originally part of 'The Cliffe' estate before being sold to the Fairbairn family. The property was apparently developed by Fairbairns immediately prior to purchase by Sir Norman Brearley, founder of the first air mail service in Western Australia. He owned and occupied the place for at least 40 years. Considerable historical significance.

Integrity/Authenticity

The plan form of the house, with its angled northern rooms,
shows a likely knowledge of contemporary German
architectural practice, such as the domestic works of Hans
Scharoun.
