Physical Description

Situated at the bend of Middleton Road, the place comprises a large natural granite outcrop in the shape of a dog’s head. White reflecting blocks have been painted on the rock to appear as a collar. Further to the south on Aberdeen Street is the ‘tail’ of the dog.

History

Called ‘Yacka’ (wild dog tamed) by local Aboriginal groups (with the tail portion known as ‘Yakknint’) Yakkan Toort/Dog Rock is part of the Menang Noongar creation story, and the path that mythical beings took while traveling across the landscape. The place was also an early tourist location, being a popular subject for photographers. Despite its popularity Yakkan Toort/Dog Rock has also periodically caused concerns due to it being a potential traffic hazard, with a number of proposals for its modification or removal over the years, particularly as residential development grew, and motor vehicle transport became the norm.
