Statement of Significance

The place has historical significance as a two-storey warehouse turned hotel dating from 1911.
It has aesthetic significance as a Federation Free Style building that contributes to the visual quality of the streetscape.
The place is a representative example of a commercial building constructed in Perth during the period of development and consolidation following the gold boom.
It has associations with Perth identity Miss Maud and is possibly an example of the work of architect William Wolf.

Physical Description

Predominantly two storey building addressing the Murray Street / Pier Street corner. Building features arched openings and decorative gables. Architectural details include pilasters and entablature embellished with florid motifs. The decorative features of the facade are picked out in colour - colour scheme is not original. Building extensively altered at ground level.
First floor windows have been altered.
The building is a component of a significant streetscape which extends from the Pier Street intersection to St Mary's Cathedral. It also contributes to the aesthetic value of Pier Street.

History

Marjorie Ward sold the hotel in the 1960s to a man who wanted to gift it to his son, but tragically the son was killed in a car accident soon after; so the hotel was on-sold to ‘Miss Maud’. Maud Edmiston arrived in Perth in 1968 from Sweden. Realising how much she missed the cafes in Stockholm, she was inspired to open her first store ‘Miss Maud’ in Carillon City in 1971. In 1973, Miss Maud brought Smörgåsbord to Perth, opening Miss Maud Swedish Hotel and Restaurant on the corner of Pier and Murray Streets, Perth, in the former Derward Hotel. In 1979, Miss Maud’s was the first restaurant in Perth to apply for an al fresco dining licence. It became a Perth institution. In 1992, Maud Edmiston was named the ‘Bulletin’s Business Woman of the Year’, and in 2001 was awarded the Western Australian Citizen of the Year – Industry and Commerce, the first woman to receive this award. Miss Maud’s coffee bean poll in Perth has become a part of popular culture. The poll has accurately predicted the outcome of every Federal election since 1996, except for Kevin Rudd's win in 2007.In 2018, the company sold the Miss Maud Swedish hotel and Restaurant at 93 Murray Street to focus on its café chain. As of 2021 the ‘Miss Maud’ hospitality group comprises seventeen Miss Maud pastry houses, one Cafe Stockholm-branded outlet, and a catering service, all located in Western Australia. In 2022, the building has lost original detail at ground floor level. It features arched openings and decorative gables, pilasters and entablature embellished with florid motifs. The decorative features of the facade are picked out in a colour (not original). The ground floor is extensively altered.
