Buildings, which due to their character create the atmosphere of Peppermint Grove, therefore should be retained, but may be altered and extended in a manner which is both discrete and sympathetic to the original fabric and character so that a significant proportion of the original building is retained and from the street the additions are seen to be a continuation of the same fabric and character.

Statement of Significance

This single storey struck rendered brickwork and iron former
school cum hall has cultural heritage significance because:
it has considerable historic and social significance;
it provided the first Roman Catholic school in the district,
which was later converted into a hall for use by the local
Parish;
it was the only school of its type within the suburb;
it forms a landmark group with the neighbouring "Star of
the Sea" Roman Catholic church;
it appears to have been a standardised model for a small
school.

Physical Description

Designed as a hall with attached classroom wing cum
offices/vestries, with separate entries, the place appears to be a
standardised layout, with the entry porch styled to relate to the
adjacent "Star of the Sea" Church. There is sufficient
competence in the design to assume it was an architect's design.

History

Opened in 1905 as the local Catholic School, 'Star of the Sea'
school was staffed by Nuns from the Presentation Convent in
Mosman Park. The School later became a church hall as many
of the local children were sent in preference to Loreto in
Claremont. Considerable historical significance.

Integrity/Authenticity

There appears to be no direct corresponding model of this school
within the public educational system. The other private schools
in the suburb at this time utilised adapted residences.
