Bardeen is still owned and occupied by direct descendants of the original grantee, Abraham William Morgan, and the buildings which date from 1858 have not been significantly altered since 1900. The Morgans were pioneers in the valley and Bardeen is composed of a group of substantial buildings and thereby has a greater sense of place than the more common single farmhouse. The complex illustrates the typical vernacular building methods of the Avon valley during the difficult years of settlement.
The buildings are substantially original and have had no significant alterations since 1900 when verandahs were added linking the two section. The verandah at the back of the two storey house has been enclosed. Stone, brick and timber have been used in the construction and the original shingles are evident beneath the corrugated iron roof. Other buildings in the complex are a stone barn, stone workmen's cottages, stockyards of post and rail and nearby is the grave of Abraham Morgan, partly enclosed by a substantial wall with piers at the corners. Most of the structures are in good condition though repairs to the stonework of the barn are unsympathetic.
Assessment 1980
Construction 1858 onwards
Alterations/additions: 1900 verandahs added
This property was taken up in 1836. The single storey section of the house is believed to have been built before 1858 and a painting dated 1868 shows both this and the later two storey section.
