Andrew Muir, son of the original Andrew Muir of Forest Hill near Mt. Barker, took up land at Mabagup in 1856 then moved to the present Lake Muir property I 0 1860. He married in 1865 and the brick house was built that year by ticket-of-Leave men. The farm was carried on by Andrew’s son Willie, his other two surviving sons, Andrew and Robert, settling at Mordalup and Seaton Ross respectively. Lake Muir was on the main route between the Muir families of the Manjimup and Mt. Barker districts and an important link between them. It is still in the hands of. Muir descendants. It is one of the earliest homes in the district and a. good example of local dwellings of the period. It is situated on high land overlooking Lake Muir and a number of old trees survive.
The original house is of soft burnt brick laid in Flemish bond, now washed or painted over in a cream colour. There are verandahs front and back and the roof which is hipped at one end and gabled at the other i s now of corrugated iron. Inside is an Oregon pine ceiling in original condition.
