Statement of Significance

The six shops represent a significant investment in the future of Narrogin in 1904. The extensive
development comprised a number of goods, services and retailers demonstrating the support for the
settlement and development of the town and it makes a significant contribution to the Egerton Street
streetscape, and the historic streetscape and townscape of the Narrogin Town Centre.

Physical Description

The single storey shops have an expansive frontage comprising six separate shops. Little remains of
the original shop frontages although most have a low dado and a series of three highlight windows
that are likely original. Only one shop has a truncated recessed entry indicating what was likely for all
of them. The face brick parapet with rendered pilasters and small arched decorations atop separate
the six bays. The central triangular pediment with decorative mouldings has the words “erected 1904”.
The original veranda has been replaced by a suspended boxed canopy across the entire frontage.

History

These shops were the first premises of FJ Northwood Draper and Clothier, Boot and Shoe Importer.
He later moved to Fortune Street. Many functions and changes since that time. In 1908 Fitts Butcher
shop; Prettytjohn’s greengrocery; J Dunn’s dressmaker; Stempleman’s hairdressers, and Edwards
Tearooms. Later one of the shops was the Co-operative grocery.
