Statement of Significance

The precinct is of exceptional significance in representing the development of Wickepin from the inception as a town in 1909. The streetscape value of the Wogolin Road Precinct is exceptional in representing the unique character of Wickepin.

Physical Description

A distinctive streetscape which gives an identity to the town of Wickepin. A number of the buildings have retained their verandahs, giving a unique character to Wickepin.

History

The main street has developed from the first beginnings of the construction of the hotel opposite the railway gates in 1909. The street focused around the railway line and the station, and developed on the south side of the road, south of the railway line, in a ribbon towards Narrogin in the west and Dudinin and Kulin in the east. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, the late night Friday shopping, and the Saturday afternoon and evening shopping, followed by a dance at the hall, were popular events recalled by this precinct of shops and sen/ices. During the 1960s the baker had Sunday afternoon bakes which were very popular, as were the times he specially had a bake after the sport. Wednesdays were "pastie days" when everyone came to town. Commercial fortunes have fluctuated through the intervening years, and in 1995, some of the shops are vacant.
