Dukin - Town & Siding Site

History

The town and siding of Dukin took its name from the old 'Dookinwarrin' soak some ten miles to the north west. In 1913 while the Public Works Department waited for money to start the building of the new Wyalkatchem to Bencubbin railway line discussion proceeded about siding names. All native place-names in the area and the names of residents, the railways studied with interest. Dookin, a contraction of Dookinwarrin, now spelt "Dukin", as the Lands Department changed all the old double-0 sounds to U in 1911 was given to the siding near the road across the Cowcowing Lakes known as Denny's Crossing. It is still pronounced 'Dookin' by some, although sadly 'Dookinwarrin' has now become 'Duckinwarrin'
The town of Dukin was gazetted on the 21 January, 1921. From the time the railway was built there was a shop and a wheat bin and a number of houses lived in by bin attendants, the shop owners and others. The shop also ran the telephone exchange for the area. By the 1980's the shop had closed down, the bin had been removed and now there is very little left to remind anyone of the little village that it once was.
