This portion of Sadlier Street was subdivided for residential lots in 1893 by owners, the NSW company, Intercolonial Investment Land and Building Company. However the lots were not taken up rapidly. In 1896, lots in the Redfern Estate, Subiaco were advertised in the local press as ‘Good Building Lots, near the railway line’. The subdivision was managed by Alfred Axon, the local branch manager for the Intercolonial Investment Land and Building Company. Axon was also a significant individual investor in Subiaco property.
This lot and adjacent lots 67 and 68 were purchased by Carl Wilhelm Sange (sic) in 1896.
The original house on this lot is likely to have been the first house constructed in the street. The Rate Books indicate that the house was built c. 1912 for Patrick Barron (carrier).
The Rate Books contain the following listings:
• 1912/13 – 1918/19 Patrick Barron – owner/occupier
• 1929/30 Irene Bucke – owner & Edgar Milner (grocer) – occupier.
• 1935/1936 Mrs Irene Rebecca Bucke (widow) – owner/occupier
PO Directories list the following occupants:
• 1917 – 1929 Barron, Patrick
• 1930 Simpson
• 1931 Milnar, Edgar
• 1933/4 – 1939/40 Mrs I Bucke
• 1940/41 – 1947 Nicholls, Hy
• 1949 Hutchinson Rex
Patrick Barron (c1862-1935) and Rose Barron (c1887-1972) lived at the house until c1930 and relocating to Rupert Street, Subiaco. Their son Peter John Barron built the house next door at 11 Sadlier Road.
The original house was demolished in c1975.
