History

Established c 1899, Narrogin Trading and Agency Co was a leading merchant trader of a variety of goods with branches in Narrogin, Williams and Bunbury. Narrogin Trading and Agency Co acted as insurance agents, conducted an agency for motor cars and sold farm machinery.

The firm is thought to have been founded by Walter Henry Kaeshagen, who walked from South Australia to Coolgardie in 1894 when he was sixteen years old. Kaeshagen was a founding member of both the Bunbury Traders Association (formed c 1920) and its successor, the Bunbury Chamber of Commerce (formed c 1930). W H Kaeshagen is commemorated by Kaeshagen Street in Picton.

Narrogin Trading and Agency Co was a brick and iron premises with a roof concealed behind a parapet with a central pediment. The business name was embellished across the pediment and continued below, across the entire width of the building, in large lettering.

Narrogin Trading and Agency Co built a service station adjacent to the shop in 1927. The business was still in operation in the 1940s.
