Duplex, 7-9 Burt Street is a good example of a stone attached pair of residences in the Federation Queen Anne style, representing the expansion of Fremantle in the gold boom period of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.
Duplex, 7-9 Burt Street is a single storey stone and rendered brick attached pair which has a zincalume hipped roof and one chimney extant.
This place contains a limestone feature.
Burt Street is likely named after Chief Justice Sir Archibald Paull Burt, who came to Fremantle in 1861 from the West Indies. His son, Septimus Burt, became the first Attorney-General under Responsible Government.
Duplex, 7-9 Burt Street was built in 1892 for owners John and Hannah Boyle, who also built the adjoining House, 5 Burt Street.
In 1989 there was a submission for subdivision and amalgamation for the formation of two new lots – No 100 and No 101 which includes the right of carriage way to New Lot 101.
