Statement of Significance

The place is notable as an early site in the business and commercial development of the town of Woodanilling.

Physical Description

The house faces south fronting Carlton Street. This aspect has a dropped pitch verandah. The hipped roof is replicated with two adjoining structures running east and west with two prominent chimneys connecting the centre walls. It was originally clad with galvanised iron (from Kalgoorlie) on a wooden frame - modifications with more modern cladding are evident

History

There were a number of builders and carpenters in the Woodanilling area just after the turn of the Century. These included William Bennett and Jack Doubikin. Jack Doubikin first came from the Eastern States to Woodanilling in about 1912 and worked in Richardson's store for a number of years and being a carpenter he did a fair amount of building, including his own home which still stands in Woodanilling today. For many years it has been the home of Wally Shaw and his family.

Jack and Essie Doubikin left for Collie at the end of 1927. Doubikin ran the first mail run from Woodanilling which was out to Cartmeticup. This commenced in the early 1920's and Jack Doubikin initially used a horse and sulky. Doubikin was a keen church worker and often conducted services. He was also active in the Rifle Club being secretary for a period.
