Statement of Significance

Ambulance Hall (fmr) more recently known as History Hall, is significant for the associations with St
John Ambulance Association for over 40 years, and the Town’s Honorary historian, Maurie White after
History House was established in 1997. The Interwar architecture is unusual and makes a significant
contribution to the Egerton Street streetscape, and the historic streetscape and townscape of the
Narrogin Town Centre.

Physical Description

The single storey building is elevated and set back from the street. The construction is of decorative
moulded concrete blocks, typical of the period. The symmetrical frontage has a central double door
entry flanked by pairs of multi-paned casement windows with highlights. The simple hipped roof has
a central front gablet. Central on the frontage is e semi-enclosed porch with a timber framed
fibrocement dado and timber framed glazing above.

History

Built as the local St. John Ambulance Centre in 1937 and operated until 1984 when they relocated to
a new centre near the hospital in Johnston Street. In 1985, Numbat Industries operated a sheltered
workshop, Community Arts Hall to 1996, and from 1997, renamed History Hall, it has housed an
impressive local history collection, initially gathered by the Narrogin Historical Society and later
catalogued by Maurie White as Honorary Historian for the Town of Narrogin. The collection includes
Council records, historical documents, Narrogin Observer newspapers, maps, plans, charts,
calendars, records of local organisations such as minute books, correspondence, newsletters
and magazines relating to local history, collections of photographs, and cemetery records. The
collection of historical is now stored at Narrogin Library and is accessible to the public. New roof
sheeting and downpipes fitted in 2013.
