Statement of Significance

The place is significant in representing a way of life no longer practiced. The place is integral within the streetscape, and the last remaining boarding house building in Corrigin. The place demonstrates associations with settlers in the district.

Physical Description

The place is a brick construction with a hipped corrugated iron roof. The front has a brick parapet and a front verandah with a skillion roof out to the street boundary where the square jarrah columns and picket fence delineate the property. The frontage is symmetrical with a double hung windows balanced each side of the central front door which opens into a wide hall.

History

The place is situated opposite the railway station. The development of the railway line and the town of Corrigin were interconnected, and a boarding house in close proximity to the railway line, hotel and town centre was well patronised. Jimmy Dougan, a storekeeper and well known identity owned the boarding house at one time. In the late 1930s it was Dot Walton's Boarding House, and later Madill's Boarding house and residence. In the 1960s Mrs Bourden ran the place as a boarding house, although at other times it has been a private residence. As the town developed, the place became a guest house, and more recently continued the hospitality tradition with home made food available to complement the local craftwork on display.
